Singapore new president: Halimah wants to continue living in her HDB flat

President-elect Halimah Yacob says she will continue to live in her sixth-floor Housing Board flat, making her Singapore's first head of state to live in public housing while in office.

Shortly after being declared the winner in an uncontested presidential election yesterday, she told reporters that she had no plans to move out of her family home in Yishun.
"I am still staying in Yishun," the 63-year-old said. "It is a very nice, comfortable place, and I have been living there for many years."

Her husband, retired businessman Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, 63, added with a smile that there was no need to move, as the flat was "as huge as a penthouse".
The jumbo flat is made up of a four-room and a five-room flat bought on the resale market, and it is where Madam Halimah has lived with her family for more than 30 years. She has two sons and three daughters, aged 26 to 36.

A US Senate committee has opposed Trump Administration’s proposal of a drastic 92 per cent cut in US aid to Sri Lanka,

"In Sri Lanka, US foreign assistance will be cut by 92 per cent, mostly from accounts that have supported programs to promote the rule of law, democratic reforms, post-Civil War reconciliation and related efforts," rued Congressman Ted Yoho, Chairman of House Foreign Affairs Sub Committee on Asia and the Pacific.

The Senate committee on its report said that Sri Lanka is strategically positioned along key shipping lanes and emerging from decades of conflict.

Citing the geographical and strategic location of Sri Lanka, a Senate committee has opposed Trump Administration’s proposal of a drastic 92 per cent cut in American aid to the island nation.

“Given the geostrategic importance of the country, the Committee does not support the President’s budget request for Sri Lanka, which proposed a 92 per cent reduction in assistance from the prior fiscal year,” the Senate Appropriations Committee said in a report passing the annual State appropriations bill for the fiscal year 2018, beginning October 1.

The appropriations bill, which landed on the Senate floor yesterday for consideration, seeks USD 43 million for Sri Lanka. This includes USD 35 million as economic support fund, USD 6.8 million for non-proliferation and anti-terrorism and USD 500,000 in foreign military financing and an equal amount for training of military personnel.

But with man's effort to fulfill his requirements, a man voluntarily dies of his own life.

This is a problem that people cannot solve.

If a man who thinks wisely suits himself to suicide, how can he be called an intelligent man?

Most of the activities in the modern world take place through modern technology.

Technology was created because of the thinking of human beings.

With such a small amount of people, the developed world has been created today.

Much of the work involves computer technology and mathematics.

The numbers, or identification data, have helped to make this development.

 In the developed world, many things are used to identify numbers and symbols. This is a well-developed method. This will be further developed in the future. Today, the people living are much more readily understood.

Sri Lanka's High Court jailed a top civil servant for three years Thursday in the first corruption sanction against a member of former president Mahinda Rajapakse's government

Lalith Weeratunga was also fined two million rupees and ordered to pay 50 million in damages for spending 600 million rupees ($4 million) of state cash on Rajapakse's failed re-election bid in 2015.

Weeratunga, then head of the civil service and Rajapakse's most senior aide, was found guilty of misappropriating money belongining to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), which he chaired.

The TRC director-general of the time Anusha Palpita was also jailed for three years for allowing its cash to be diverted to promote Rajapakse's election bid.

The court was told that 600 million rupees in gifts of textiles was given to Buddhist devotees along with Rajapakse's election propoganda material.

Election officials told the court they were aware of the distribution of parcels of cloth to voters and ruled it a violation of election laws.
